Home Remedies For Blepharitis

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is an ocular disease characterized by inflammation of the eyelid margins. Blepharitis may cause redness of the eyes, itching and irritation of the eyelids in one or both eyes. Its appearance is often confused with conjunctivitis and due to its recurring nature it is the most common cause of “recurrent conjunctivitis” in older people. It is also often mistaken for “dry eye” by patients due to the gritty sensation that may occur, however lubricating drops do little to improve the condition.

Classification

There are two types of blepharitis:

1. Anterior blepharitis affects the anterior margin (front) of the eyelid near the roots of the eyelashes. The causes are seborrheic dermatitis (similar to dandruff) and, more rarely, infection by Staphylococcus bacteria.
2. Posterior blepharitis affects the posterior margin (back) of the eyelids, the part that makes contact with the eyes. This is caused by the oil glands present in this region and can be exacerbated by scalp dandruff. It is by far the most common type of blepharitis.

Seborrheic blepharitis

Seborrheic blepharitis, the most common type of blepharitis,is usually one part of the spectrum of seborrheic dermatitis which involves the scalp, lashes, eyebrows, nasolabial folds and ears. Treatment is best accomplished by a dermatologist.

Staphylococcal blepharitis

Staphlycoccal blepharitis is caused by infection of the anterior portion of the eyelid by Staphylococcal bacteria. As the infection progresses, the sufferer may begin to notice a foreign body sensation, matting of the lashes, and burning. Usually, the primary care physician will prescribe topical antibiotics for staphylococcal blepharitis. Unfortunately this is rarely an effective treatment. The condition can sometimes lead to a chalazion or a stye.

Posterior blepharitis or rosacea-associated blepharitis

The most common type of blepharitis is often found in people with a Rosacea skin type. The oil glands in the lid of rosacea sufferers secrete a modified oil which leads to inflammation at the gland openings which are found at the edge of the lid.

Home Remedies For Athlete’s Foot

What is Athlete’s foot ?

Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus. The infection causes a rash that may have a ring-shape with a raised edge. It can be quite itchy and flaky. When the scalp is infected, there is often an area of baldness. Fungal infections of the feet are usually very itchy and cause cracking between the toes.

Ringworm spreads from person to person by touch. When someone with ringworm touches or scratches the rash, the fungus sticks to the fingers or gets under the fingernails. The fungus is then spread when that person touches someone else. Ringworm of the scalp can also spread if combs and hairbrushes are shared.
The most common types of ringworm include the following:
  • Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis or foot ringworm) – This common condition mostly affects teen and adult males. It less frequently affects children before puberty. Contributing causes include sweating, not drying the feet well after swimming or bathing, wearing tight socks and shoes, and warm weather conditions.
  • Jock itch (tinea cruris or groin ringworm) – This condition is also more common in males and occurs more often during warm weather conditions. It is very rare in females.
  • Scalp ringworm (tinea capitis) – Scalp ringworm is highly contagious, especially among children. It occurs mainly in children between the ages of 2 to 10. It rarely occurs in adults. Ringworm of the scalp can also develop into a kerion, a large, tender lesion over the area of the initial ringworm. This is caused by a hypersensitivity to the ringworm and may be associated with a rash elsewhere and tender lymph nodes in the neck.
  • Nail ringworm (tinea unguium) – An infection of the finger or toe nail, characterized by a thickened, deformed nail. This condition more often affects the toenails than the fingernails. This occurs more often in adolescents and adults rather than young children.
  • Body ringworm (tinea corporis) – This skin infection is characterized by a ring-like rash anywhere on the body or the face. This occurs in all ages and is more common in warmer climates.

Home Remedies For Anemia

What is Anemia

The general definition of anemia is decrease in normal number of red blood cells (RBCs) or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood.More specifically, it is the concentration of hemoglobin, red blood cell volume, or red blood cell number.

Sometimes, decreased blood volume (hypovolemia) is also included in anemia definition, which, however, in case of hypovolemia caused by bleeding, indirectly causes decreased hemoglobin concentration because of shift of interstitial fluid to plasma in autoreperfusion. Still, other causes of hypovolemia, such as dehydration or vomiting, which not cause loss of red blood cells or hemoglobin, actually increase blood hemoglobin concentration, which is contrary to the general definition of anemia.
