Home Remedies For Asthma

What is asthma?

Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, characterized by periodic attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.

Asthma is a disease in which inflammation of the airways causes airflow into and out of the lungs to be restricted. When an asthma attack occurs, the muscles of the bronchial tree become tight and the lining of the air passages swells, reducing airflow and producing the characteristic wheezing sound. Mucus production is increased.
Most people with asthma have periodic wheezing attacks separated by symptom-free periods. Some asthmatics have chronic shortness of breath with episodes of increased shortness of breath. Other asthmatics may have cough as their predominant symptom. Asthma attacks can last minutes to days, and can become dangerous if the airflow becomes severely restricted.
In sensitive individuals, asthma symptoms can be triggered by inhaled allergens (allergy triggers), such as pet dander, dust mites, cockroach allergens, molds, or pollens. Asthma symptoms can also be triggered by respiratory infections, exercise, cold air, tobacco smoke and other pollutants, stress, food, or drug allergies. Aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) provoke asthma in some patients.
Asthma is found in 3-5% of adults and 7-10% of children. Half of the people with asthma develop it before age 10, and most develop it before age 30. Asthma symptoms can decrease over time, especially in children.
Many people with asthma have an individual and/or family history of allergies, such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or eczema. Others have no history of allergies or evidence of allergic problems.
Asthma is sometimes classified in various ways. Often, these “types of asthma” describe the triggers that may cause an asthma episode (or asthma attack) or the things that make asthma worse in certain individuals. Types of asthma include:
  • Exercise-Induced Asthma – Exercise can make asthma symptoms worse. With treatment and monitoring, people with exercise-induced asthma can participate in physical activities.
  • Nocturnal Asthma – Worsening of asthma at night is very common. Treatment of underlying causes is important in managing nocturnal asthma.
  • Occupational Asthma – Workplace exposure to certain chemicals or dusts can induce asthma. Quick recognition and control of workplace exposures is important.
  • Steroid-Resistant Asthma (Severe Asthma) – While the majority of patients respond to regular inhaled glucocorticoid (steroid) therapy, some are steroid resistant.
SYNONYMS
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Exercise Induced asthma – Bronchial
  • Reactive airways disease (RAD)
SYMPTOMS
  • Wheezing

    • usually begins suddenly
    • is episodic
    • may be worse at night or in early morning

  • Cough with or without sputum (phlegm) production
  • Shortness of breath that is aggravated by exercise
  • Breathing that requires increased work

Emergency symptoms:
  • Extreme difficulty breathing
  • Bluish color to the lips and face
  • Severe anxiety
  • Rapid pulse
  • Sweating
  • Decreased level of consciousness (severe drowsiness or confusion) during an asthma attack
Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease:

  • Chest pain
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Abnormal breathing pattern, in which exhalation (breathing out) takes more than twice as long as inspiration (breathing in)
  • Breathing which temporarily stops
  • Coughing up blood

Home Remedies for Asthma

Remedy 1:Calamus:Give small doses of 10 grains of this herb. Repeated every two or three hours till relief is obtained.

Remedy 2:Coltsfoot:A syrup, prepared from the leaves, has proved its worth in lung disorders and bronchitis.
In an earthenware pot put alternate layers of leaves and raw sugar, let it settle and keep adding until the pot is full. Cover well with 2 to 3 layers of strong parchment paper. Now put the pot in a hole in the ground in a sheltered spot in the garden.
Place a board over it and cover with soil. The even temperature produces fermentation. After 8 weeks dig out the pot, boil up the syrup thus obtained, once or twice. Pour into small wide necked bottles.
This syrup is our best protection against winter and influenza.

Home Remedies For Acne

Home Remedies For Acne

What is acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by skin eruptions around hair follicles. Acne is most common in teenagers, but it can occur at all ages. The condition usually begins at puberty and may continue for many years. Three out of four teenagers have acne to some extent, probably caused by hormonal changes that stimulate the sebaceous (oil producing) skin glands. Other hormonal changes related to menstrual periods, pregnancy, birth control pills, or stress can also aggravate acne. All acne is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, which is made up of a hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and a hair. These units are found everywhere on the body except on the palms, soles, top of the feet, and the lower lip. The number of pilosebaceous units is greatest on the face, upper neck, and chest. Sebaceous glands produce a substance called sebum, which is responsible for keeping the skin and hair moisturized. During adolescence sebaceous glands enlarge and produce more sebum under the influence of hormones, also called androgens. After about age 20, sebum production begins to decrease. Most people develop acne during adolescence. It is most prevalent in those aged 16 to 18 years. The reasons are: There are higher levels of sex hormones at puberty than in younger children. These hormones are converted in the skin to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which stimulates oil glands to enlarge. The oil glands, called sebaceous glands, produce sebum. The more sebum, the more likely it is that acne will be troublesome. If sebum and keratin (dead skin cells) block the skin pores, comedones can develop. The wall of the follicles may rupture. Bacteria and comedonal debris cause acne pimples or pustules (inflammatory lesions). Acne usually becomes less of a problem after the age of 25 years, although about 15% of women and 5% of men continue to have acne as adults. Although all acne begins the same way, with bacteria flourishing in a follicle clogged with oil and dead skin, it can develop into many types of acne: Whitehead – If the plugged follicle stays below the surface of the skin, the lesion is called a whitehead. They usually appear on the skin as small, whitish bumps. Blackhead – If the plug enlarges and pushes through the surface of the skin, it’s called a blackhead. The plug’s dark appearance is not due to dirt, but rather to a buildup of melanin, the skin’s dark pigment. Papule – The mildest form of inflammatory acne is the papule, which appears on the skin as a small, firm pink bump. These can be tender to the touch, and are often considered an intermediary step between non-inflammatory and clearly inflammatory lesions. Pustule – Like papules, pustules are small round lesions; unlike papules, they are clearly inflamed and contain visible pus. They may appear red at the base, with a yellowish or whitish center. Pustules do not commonly contain a great deal of bacteria; the inflammation is generally caused by chemical irritation from sebum components such as fatty free acids. Nodule or Cystic Acne – Large and usually very painful, nodules are inflamed, pus-filled lesions lodged deep within the skin. Nodules develop when the contents of a plugged follicle have spilled into the surrounding skin and the local immune system responds, producing pus. The most severe form of acne lesion, nodules may persist for weeks or months, their contents hardening into a deep cyst. Both nodules and cystic acne often leave deep scars. Acne conglobata – This rare but serious form of inflammatory acne develops primarily on the back, buttocks and chest. In addition to the presence of pustules and nodules, there may be severe bacterial infection. SYNONYMS Acne vulgaris Cystic acne Pimples Comedones SYMPTOMS Skin rash or lesion on the face, truck (chest) neck, back, or other area Comedones (whiteheads or blackheads) Pustules Cysts Papules Nodules Redness (erythema) of the skin lesions or skin around a lesion Inflammation around the skin eruptions Crusting of skin eruptions Scarring of the skin .
